Aspen

Lightweight, soft, straight-grained. Easy to work, with a uniform texture. Low bending rate and high seasonal shrinkage.

Sauna benches/interiors, kitchen utensils, interior trim, furniture components, and many food-safe purposes.

Mostly straight grain, resistant to rot and termites. Some resistance to marine borers and powder post beetles. Following the February 2021 military take over of Myanmar, sanctions were placed on imported teak limiting the available stock.

Generally straight grain, some have curly grain patterns, Heartwood is light pinkish brown when cut, then darkens with time and exposure to light. Sapwood is pale yellowish color. Common for most to have some sapwood along the outer edges. Durable and resistant to rot, however not generally used in exterior applications. Machines well. Some issues when staining.

Soft Maple

Roughly 25% softer than Hard Maple. Grey-brown to reddish hardwood. Fine, straight grain that is much easier to machine than hard maple. Takes stain easily.
