Grain is straight with an even, medium texture. Heartwood is a light brown, sometimes with a slightly reddish hue, sapwood is pale yellow to nearly white. Color tends to darken with age. Moderate to low rot resistance. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, glues and finishes well.

Green White Oak

  • Green
Green white oak will have similar properties to kiln dried, except that it will allow for steam bending more readily to form curves in shipbuilding applications.

White Oak

  • FAS
  • Rustic
  • Rift
  • +3
Grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture. Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast. Paler sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns. Produces good results with hand and machine tools, though it has fairly high shrinkage values, resulting in mediocre dimensional stability, especially in flat sawn boards. Rot resistant.

Red Oak

  • FAS
Grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture, Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with a reddish cast. Paler sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns. Rated as non-durable to perishable, with poor insect resistance. Can become discolored and stained when in contact with water, Produces good results with hand and machine tools, though it has fairly high shrinkage values, resulting in mediocre dimensional stability, especially in flat sawn boards.

Soft Maple

  • FAS
  • SEL/Btr
  • Curly
Roughly 25% softer than Hard Maple. Grey-brown to reddish hardwood. Fine, straight grain that is much easier to machine than hard maple. Takes stain easily.

Hard Maple

  • FAS
  • SEL/Btr
  • #1
Mostly straight grain, some may have a wavy grain. Fine even texture. The sapwood is used rather than heartwood due to its creamy and even appearance. Sapwood color ranges from nearly white to and off-white cream color. Not rot or insect resistant. Extremely dense, and can be difficult to machine, especially in comparison to soft maple.

South American Mahogany

  • Pattern
Straight, interlocked, irregular or wavy grain. Medium and uniform texture. Hearwood color can vary from pale pinkish brown to darker reddish brown. Color darkens with age. Rot resistance varies on density and growing conditions of the tree. Heartwood is generally resistant to termites, but not other insects. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, except when working with figured or irregular grain. Sands, turns, glues, stains and finishes well.

Colors darken with age, QS surfaces show a ribbon-stripe appearance. Somewhat rot and insect resistant. Easy to work, although tearout can be a problem with interlocked grain. Glues, turns, finishes well.
