Iroko

Grain interlocked and sometimes irregular, medium to coarse texture. Heartwood usually yellow to golden or medium brown, tending to darken over time. Pale yellow sapwood. Highly rot and insect resistant. Easy to work unless interlocked grain, which may cause some tear out during surfacing. Can also cause dulling for cutter. Glues and finishes well. CAUTION: Iroko dust is a known irritant and respirators are recommended while working with this material.

Veneer, flooring, furniture, cabinetry, boatbuilding (including keels, horn timbers, and structural beams), turned items.

Straight, interlocked, irregular or wavy grain. Medium and uniform texture. Hearwood color can vary from pale pinkish brown to darker reddish brown. Color darkens with age. Rot resistance varies on density and growing conditions of the tree. Heartwood is generally resistant to termites, but not other insects. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, except when working with figured or irregular grain. Sands, turns, glues, stains and finishes well.

Sitka Spruce

Sitka Spruce has a fine, even texture, and a consistently straight grain. Ranges from cream/white to yellow; heartwood can also exhibit a subtle pinkish red hue in some instances. Heartwood is rated as being slightly resistant to non-resistant to decay.

American Walnut

Grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Has a medium texture. Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white. Typically easy to work provided the grain is straight and regular.
