Hickory

Grain is straight with an even, medium texture. Heartwood is a light brown, sometimes with a slightly reddish hue, sapwood is pale yellow to nearly white. Color tends to darken with age. Moderate to low rot resistance. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, glues and finishes well.

Fairly coarse and uneven texture. Has Conspicuous flecking, reddish brown with grey or light brown rays, resulting in a lace pattern when quartersawn. Not rot or insect resistant. Easy to work with, glues, stains, finishes well. May have some difficulty in planning.

High strength-to-weight ratios, high flexibility and tensile strength, and high shock resistance. Species is currently challenged due to an ongoing infestation of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.
